The battalion had been in action at that time in Villers Bretonneux with Australian and French troops. The Northants were busy in the region of the railway station.

The Bury Free Press of 24th August 1918 reported
BECK ROW SOLDIER'S SACRIFICE

We have to record the sad news of another young soldier from Beck Row, Mildenhall, making the great sacrifice, the death from wounds, being reported of Private Albert Webb, Northants Regiment, son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Webb. A comrade has written to the bereaved widow that the gallant soldier, with others, was being relieved from the trenches on April 24th, when the enemy started a bombardment, and he was wounded. He was carried to a place of shelter, where he fell asleep and died in his sleep, apparently before he could receive proper attention. He had been a soldier nearly two and a half years, and been in France two years.
