Albert Edward Webb was born in 1888 in Beck Row, (Mildenhall Q3-1888 4A:698) son of Henry and Mary Ann WEBB (née SHINN).
1891 census...Aged 2, he was at 18 High Street, Beck Row with his father Henry WEBB [33] shoemaker; his mother Mary A [33]; brothers Thomas [8] and William J. [6]; sisters Flora [4] and Edith [1]. All were born in Mildenhall. 1901 census...Aged 12, he was at The Street, Beck Row with his parents (mother now recorded as born in Lakenheath); brothers Thomas and William (both farm labourers; sisters Edith, Lily [8] and Olive [4]. Sister Flora was a servant at Chapel Street, Mildenhall with the baker Charles GEE and family. In Q4-1910, He married Ellen Elizabeth HINDS, later of West Row 1911 census...Aged 22, he was at Holmsey Green, Beck Row with his wife Ellen [30] born Mildenhall. His parents, brother William and sisters Olive and May [9] were still in Beck Row. All eight of Mary's children survived. |

He enlisted in Peterborough. His Army records have not been found and as he died of his wounds it is almost impossible to ascertain where and when exactly he was wounded. The battalion had been in action at that time in Villers Bretonneux with Australian and French troops. The Northants were busy in the region of the railway station. The Bury Free Press of 24th August 1918 reported BECK ROW SOLDIER'S SACRIFICE We have to record the sad news of another young soldier from Beck Row, Mildenhall, making the great sacrifice, the death from wounds, being reported of Private Albert Webb, Northants Regiment, son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Webb. A comrade has written to the bereaved widow that the gallant soldier, with others, was being relieved from the trenches on April 24th, when the enemy started a bombardment, and he was wounded. He was carried to a place of shelter, where he fell asleep and died in his sleep, apparently before he could receive proper attention. He had been a soldier nearly two and a half years, and been in France two years.
